Dionisio Aldama is a newcomer to Southern California. Originally from Cuba, he lived in Mexico for many years, winning the Mexican Championship six times and competing for Mexico’s team in the Chess Olympiad. He moved to Arizona in 2006 and then to San Diego in late 2011.

Aldama has challenged Cyrus Lakdawala’s long reign as champion of the San Diego Chess Club’s weekly Gambito tournaments. He excels in slow chess too. His career highlight was winning the 2nd Metropolitan International in Los Angeles last August. He also shared first place in the 2012 Pacific Coast Open and the 2013 Century West Open.

Lakdawala describes Aldama as “gifted tactically,” a trait he displays in both attack and defense.
