GM Melikset Khachiyan

USCF 2596
FIDE 2502

Melikset Khachiyan, the ratings favorite, has earned that distinction with consistently outstanding results over the past dozen years. He has won every major local tournament at least twice, including a record seven first prizes in the American Open. His state championship resume boasts two first prizes (2002 and 2005) and five wins in the Southern California Open.

Khachiyan has all the skills of a true chess professional – great knowledge of openings and endgames, good positional judgment, and disciplined handling of the clock.

Melik’s career began as a student at the world-famous Tigran Petrosian School of Chess, where he learned from the great man himself. As a teenager, he provided Garry Kasparov (another native of Baku) with opening analysis for one of his world championship matches. These experiences served him well when he became a teacher and trainer for several future grandmasters. Melik is especially proud of his work with Levon Aronian, whom he took from beginner to IM. Today, he gives online lessons to some of the best American juniors.
